A Note from the Founder: Why 1,000 Words?

To my fellow language learners,

We’ve all been there. You open a language app, spend weeks learning how to say “The apple is red” or “The cat drinks milk,” and then the moment you try to have a real conversation, you’re paralyzed.

The problem isn’t you. The problem is the “Bricks.”

Most language programs focus on grammar rules—the “mortar”—before they give you enough solid bricks to build a wall. I founded Tournament House to solve a very specific problem: the need for a broad, useful, and scientifically-ranked vocabulary base. Our curriculum isn’t random. We utilized a number of university studies of morphemes which we know as meanings to identify the most statistically powerful nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in the Spanish language. We then organized them into a path inspired by the “Thing Explainer” philosophy: the idea that if you master the right 1,000 words, you can explain almost any complex concept in the universe.

The Tournament House Method is simple but rigorous:

1. Focus: 12 words per lesson. No more, no less.

2. Acquisition: Bilingual and monolingual audio-visual walkthroughs that stick.

3. Active Engagement: Our custom Crossword and Target games ensure you aren’t just “seeing” words—you are recognizing and recalling them under pressure.

I built this because I believe that once you have these 1,000 bricks, the “intimidating” world of Spanish grammar finally starts to make sense. You aren’t just memorizing; you are building a foundation for life.
