CLOSE COMBAT 3 LADDER

Classic AARsBy: MrCDate: 2005-11-14
Kilroy hosted Veghel Town, A 180, G 130, 3 out of 5, I chose Germans. This must have been the most exciting game yet for me, with many ups and downs and some really crazy shots. Kilroy chose two Fireflies, an AVRE, a 50 cal, a mortar, a flamerman, a few AB Rifles, zooks and recons. My setup was: an HFP, a Mark III, two FJ Schrecks, an SS Sturm, two FJ MG 42, two FJ Aufks, two SS Schutzen and two Wehrmacht Schutzen. I deploy both tanks on the east bank, same as most of my infantry. Enemy Flies are spotted guarding the northern road and the southern bridge, respectively. Counting from the north down to the south, my Aufks grab VLs 1 and 5, and a Schutzen takes VL 2. The AVRE fires two or three shots from near the graveyard at Schutzen, destroying them, but gets fausted by Aufk hiding in the trees near VL 1, from 90 metres away. The HFP drives to the trees and flames the 2 floor building housing a zook, a flamerman, and an ad hoc. All are seen exiting and running for cover by the advancing Aufk, and HFP burns them all with area fire, flamerman included. A fly catches the HFP retreating back into the forest and with only one chance does not miss, the HFP goes boom. The Aufk then proceeds to sneak east to catch the fly off-guard and faust it. There is a face to face encounter with the mortar team next to the graveyard, the Aufklarer s position is revealed and both mortar and Firefly proceed to shoot at them. With two men getting killed, the surviving Aufklarer soldier happens to be the one with the faust. And he does make use of it, under heavy enemy fire! Although it seemed most unlikely, the Aufk man did it, the Fly explodes. Two fausts, two tanks down, now that is a 5 bar FJ Aufklarer team for you. Both tank killers get awarded with Iron Crosses - posthumously. With the Fly down and the northern road open the German Kommandant makes a hasty move, ordering the Mark III to roll forward and lay suppression fire on the enemy 50 cal. That proves a big mistake, as the southern Fly moves just a tiny bit and gets an incredible dark LoS on the Mark III, killing it with the first shot from around 150+ metres. It was a crazy game all right, some impossible shots landing on mark for both sides. But more to come. With no armour left the soldaten try to think up some idea how to turn the tide. After some time, and the Fly being more less inactive, infantry skirmishes cause heavy German casualties, with Allies losing many men too, including the mortar and 50 cal teams. Many heroic deeds on both sides occur. Finally, the Germans are down to an incomplete SS Sturm in the 2 floor up north, next to the forest, a Panzerschreck in the southernmost 3 floor, west of the bridge and a full schutzen squad, just crossing the northern bridge to help out the SS lads. The Allies still have one Fly, a few incomplete squads and a full AB Rifle, outnumbering the soldaten slightly. The Fly suddenly moves in to support the Rifle squad in advancing on the northern VL. Its crew must be unaware of the SS squad s position though, as a faust gets fired from around 20-30 metres but misses, no more AT for the SS guys. The Fly is unaware of that too and stops, the Rifle team runs in. Sturm men run out on the other side and seek cover in the forest. With a schutzen team in the forest too, the soldaten find themselves cornered and with little chance of getting out alive. The full Rifle squad is in the two floor, while the Fly retreats a bit, and sits right behind them, trying to avoid getting hit by a faust from the forest. The German Kommandant tries to conjure up some desperate plan and takes a look at all his remaining units. There is the Sturm and the schutzen, who still have fausts... a scroll down south... Yeah, there is still the Schreck team, hiding at the back of the 3 floor. A scroll back north... Back south... Wait a minute... With the Fly idling next to the 2 floor up north, there is just wide open space between it and the building housing the Schreck. I check the distance, it is just about 125 metres. The schreck guys are ordered to sneak up to the building s corner immedtiately and fire. Being just within range, they take a shot soon, but miss. The Fly opens fire. The men retreat, but the Fly starts moving away, so the Schreck boys decide such a chance might not happen again. They sneak back and fire one more shot, it misses. Firefly kills one of them. The other one struggles to reload under heavy tank and infantry fire from beneath the river. The Fly opted to destroy the Schreck rather than flee after all, and the German Kommandant believed this would surely happen in a second too. In the heat of the moment he ordered the schutzen squad who had fausts to sneak up behind the Fly and kill it, while its focus was elsewhere. That involved moving right in front of the Rifle squad, so the Sturm team is sent out charging the Rifle at full speed to get their attention away from the fausters. The most strange thing happens then. Sturm get taken out, Fly turns round to fire at the Schutzen, so does Rifle squad. Schutzen gain LOS but are suppressed and do not fire the fausts. They get taken out by the Fly in a matter of seconds at point blank range. Then, some hundred and twenty-five metres away from there, the hurt Schreck soldat fires what turned out to be his last shot. It finds its mark. It is really too late now, but the Fly is gone, and that fact still matters for the sad German Kommandant. Just a split second later, a bazooka rocket kills the last man standing. An unforgettable game! It was tense and very exciting. I am really looking forward to playing you again kilroy! C
